New year, new skill

Happy New Year. Yes, it's a little late. But that's just how I roll.

This new year brings about some new things I'd like to change about myself, as new years are wont to do. This year is the year I am determined to learn to cook. Now, I can follow a recipe just fine, thanks, but it's time I learn to really cook, to be a little more creative in the kitchen (and how could I fail, given that I haven't spent much time in the kitchen) - to not rely so much on printed recipes. How am I going to start? With printed recipes, of course! My husband is and has been the cook in our family. He can look in the pantry, size up what we've got and have dinner on the table (delicious, of course) in 30 minutes or less. It's absolutely mindboggling to me.

I'm not sure how it happened, but growing up I didn't learn anything about cooking. Not.one.thing. So in college, I ate a lot of one pan convenience meals - such as Skillet Sensations or Hamburger Helper. That's all well and good, but it's really not so good for you. Now it matters. I'd like to be a good example for my daughter, who is now 6 1/2 months old, but is growing up fast. I'd like for her to learn how to take care of herself, how to make healthy choices, and how to feel confident in her abilities and her appearance. Naturally, this applies to all aspects of our lives, but we're starting in the kitchen.

I'll work on procrastination, maybe next year.
